Job hugging

Employed workers who feel stuck in jobs they have outgrown but are too scared of the market to leave. They want tools, coaching, or credentials that either improve their current situation or give them the confidence to move when the window opens.

Why this is growing

The U.S. quit rate held at 1.9% in both July and August 2026, tied for the lowest in a decade outside the spring 2020 lockdown, which means millions of workers are frozen in place and building up unmet career frustration that turns into demand for coaching and skill-building.

57% of U.S. workers identified as job huggers in February 2026, up 12 points from 45% just five months earlier, showing the audience is growing faster than almost any other behavioral shift in workforce research — a rare double-digit swing in under half a year.

Monster's October 2026 survey found 31% of job huggers now say staying makes them feel stuck or limited, up from 27% in 2025 — that rising dissatisfaction score is the pain that converts passive stayers into active buyers of anything that promises movement without risk.

Frozen white-collar professional

Mid-career knowledge workers in finance, IT, and professional services who feel underutilized and fear AI-driven restructuring. They are not looking for any job — they are looking for a strategic plan to either move internally or position themselves to jump when timing improves.

Golden handcuffs worker

Employees who stay specifically because of pay, benefits, or pension they cannot replicate elsewhere — not fear of the market but fear of losing compensation they have built up. They need negotiation coaching or internal mobility help to extract more from the role they are already in.

Necessity stayer building an exit

The 56% of employees MetLife found are staying out of necessity rather than genuine commitment (MetLife 2026 Employee Benefit Trends Study). They know they want to leave but are actively upskilling or credentialing so they can move from a position of strength, not desperation.
